Does it bother anyone else that parsec is a unit of length, not a unit of time?
That Han Solo did the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs is not a testament to the Falcon’s (albeit notable) speed, but to her navigation computer and Solo’s tenaciousness. Like any course, the Kessel Run has a start (Kessel) and a finish (the Si’Klaata Cluster), and the route most smugglers take to navigate it is 18 parsecs long. Han Solo, however, took the Falcon considerably closer to the Maw black hole the run normally circles around, thereby cutting six parsecs off his travel distance. Still impressive, but not a very good argument when defending your ship’s speed to a snot-nosed kid and a crazy old man.
^^ Things I am glad I learned today
[Jeff] The reason he calls out the Kessel Run as a testament to his ship’s speed is its engines were powerful enough to resist the pull the Maw black hole had on them at 12 parsecs, which, IIRC, was generally the point at which lesser ships got sucked into the void. So basically he’s saying “My ship can overpower a black hole, I think it can handle a punk kid’s taxi ride.”
i am very quick to point this out to all philistines, but this and other star wars FUN FACTS have made me realize…
…that the amount of mental gymnastics required to explain away mistakes George Lucas made and actually make them into something cool is EXACTLY THE SAME THING as the mental gymnastics required to explain away all the inconsistencies in the Bible.
